My Husband Locked Himself in the Bathroom Every Morning for 35 Years—What I Saw Inside Broke Me

My Husband Locked Himself in the Bathroom Every Morning for 35 Years—What I Saw Inside Broke Me
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

The Hidden Scar

The next morning, I couldn’t sleep. The house was silent, the only sound the distant hum of the refrigerator. I slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb Richard, and made my way to the kitchen. The clock on the stove read 3:45 AM. I poured a glass of water and leaned against the counter, my mind racing.

As I stood there, I noticed a faint light coming from the laundry room. Curiosity got the better of me, and I tiptoed over to the door. The light was coming from under the bathroom door. I pressed my ear against the wood, trying to hear anything. The sound of water running, the faint tapping of bottles, and then a low, almost inaudible groan.

My heart pounded in my chest. I couldn’t help myself. I knelt down and peered through the keyhole. What I saw made my breath catch in my throat. Richard was standing in front of the mirror, his sleeves rolled up. His arms were covered in scars—old, faded scars that told a story I had never known. He was applying some kind of ointment, his expression one of intense concentration.

“Richard,” I whispered, but he didn’t hear me. He continued his ritual, his movements deliberate and practiced. I backed away from the door, my mind reeling. What had happened to him? And why had he kept this a secret for so long?

The Workplace Accident

The following day, I waited until Richard was out of earshot before I called his old co-workers. I knew it was a breach of trust, but I needed answers. The first person I called was Tom, a man who had worked alongside Richard for over twenty years.

“Tom, it’s Eleanor Mitchell. Richard’s wife,” I said, my voice trembling. “I need to know something about Richard’s past.”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. “Eleanor, what’s this about?” Tom’s voice was cautious.

“Richard has these scars on his arms. I found out he locks himself in the bathroom every morning to treat them. I don’t understand why he’s been keeping this a secret.”

Tom sighed heavily. “Eleanor, it was a workplace accident. It happened over thirty years ago. Richard was working on a project at the plant, and there was an explosion. He saved a lot of lives that day, but he was badly injured. The scars you saw… they’re from the burns.”

My hand flew to my mouth. “He saved lives?”

“Yes. He was a hero. But he’s always been too humble to talk about it. He’s been dealing with the physical and emotional pain ever since.”

I thanked Tom and hung up, my mind racing. Richard, my quiet, dependable husband, was a hero. And he had been protecting me from the truth all these years.

The Heart of the Matter

That evening, I waited for Richard to finish his routine. When he finally emerged from the bathroom, I took a deep breath and confronted him. “Richard, I know about the accident. Tom told me everything.”

His eyes widened in shock. “Eleanor, how did you—”

“I saw the scars. I heard you treating them every morning. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Richard’s shoulders slumped, and he looked away. “I didn’t want you to worry. I didn’t want you to be burdened by my past.”

Wait until you see what happened when everything finally came to light… (Continue to Part 3 →)
