Ingredients

6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup water

2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional, for thicker sauce)

1 tablespoon water (if using cornstarch)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Start by peeling, coring, and slicing the Granny Smith apples into thin wedges. Place them in a large bowl as you go to prevent browning.

Mix Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Mix well to create a flavorful blend that will enhance the apples.

Layer the Slow Cooker: Grease the slow cooker with a bit of butter. Place half of the sliced apples in the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle half of the sugar mixture on top. Then, add the remaining apples and top with the rest of the sugar mixture.

Add Butter and Water: Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and dot it evenly over the top of the apples. Pour the water into the slow cooker around the edges, ensuring that it doesn’t wash away the sugar mixture on top.

Cook: Cover the slow cooker with its lid and set it on low for 4 to 6 hours. Stir occasionally to promote even cooking. The apples should be tender and the sauce thickened.

(Optional) Thicken Sauce: If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water to create a slurry. About 30 minutes before serving, stir the slurry into the slow cooker and let it thicken as it continues to cook.

Serve: Once the apples are cooked and tender, spoon them into serving dishes. They can be served warm as a delicious side dish, dessert, or over pancakes and ice cream for an indulgent treat.
