Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the Italian sausage and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

Sauté the Vegetables: Add the diced onion to the skillet with the sausage and cook until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and add the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Mix Ricotta Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large bowl, mix the cooked ziti with the sausage mixture, ensuring the pasta is well-coated with sauce.

Assemble the Baked Ziti: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the pasta and sausage mixture at the bottom. Spread half of the ricotta mixture on top. Sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Layer the remaining pasta on top and finish with the remaining ricotta mixture and the last cup of mozzarella. Finally, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top.

Bake the Ziti: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent excessive browning) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve and Garnish: Allow the baked ziti to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Enjoy your delicious meal!
