Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined.

Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Herbs: Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, chives, and parsley, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk with the egg. Blend well.

Form the Dough: Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk mixture. Gently fold until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.

Shape the Scones: On a lightly floured surface, turn the dough out and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges or use a biscuit cutter for round shapes.

Prepare for Baking: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a glossy finish.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the scones from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter or enjoy as they are!
