Ingredients

12-16 store-bought or homemade pierogi (potato and cheese filling recommended)

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cups sour cream

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup sauerkraut, drained (optional for tang)

4 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

Fresh chives or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Sauté Onions: In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they are golden brown and caramelized (about 8-10 minutes).

Prepare Pierogi Layer: In a large greased baking dish, spread half of the pierogi in a single layer on the bottom. If using sauerkraut, spread it over the pierogi.

Mix Cream & Cheese: In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir in half of the cheddar cheese.

Layer Ingredients: Pour half of the sour cream mixture over the first layer of pierogi. Evenly distribute the sautéed onions over this layer.

Repeat Layers: Add the remaining pierogi on top, and pour the rest of the sour cream mixture over them. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top.

Bake: Dot the top of the casserole with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, cut into small pieces. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.

Finish Baking: After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish & Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and garnish with freshly chopped chives or parsley before serving.
