Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon orange zest

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1 cup warm milk (110°F)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

3 large eggs, room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 colored eggs (for decoration)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Sprinkles (for decoration, optional)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk with the yeast and a teaspoon of granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until bubbly.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, salt, orange zest, and lemon zest.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat together the melted butter, 3 eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour the yeast mixture into this bowl and combine.

Form Dough: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Shape Bread: Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into long strands about 12-15 inches long. Braid the strands together to form a loaf and tuck the ends under to shape it into a circle.

Prepare Colored Eggs: Gently place the colored eggs into the braided circle of dough. You can place them so they rest on top or tuck them into the braids, depending on your preference.

Second Rise: Cover the dough again with a towel and let it rise for another 30 to 40 minutes.

Egg Wash and Sprinkles: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the bread has risen, beat the remaining egg and brush it over the surface of the dough. If desired, sprinkle with festive sprinkles.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. An inserted toothpick should come out clean.

Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve it warm or at room temperature for a delightful Easter treat!
