Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for topping)

2 cups hot water

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square or round baking dish.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined, then pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.

Prepare the Topping: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and 1/2 cup of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.

Add Hot Water: Carefully pour the hot water over the top of the cake batter. Do not stir – the water will create a fudge-like sauce underneath!

Bake the Cake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean.

Serve: Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes before serving. Spoon it out into bowls, making sure to get some of the rich hot fudge sauce that forms at the bottom. Serve warm, possibly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
