Ingredients

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup coconut sugar (or any low-glycemic sweetener)

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsweetened applesauce

1 cup Greek yogurt (plain, preferably low-fat)

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup dark chocolate chips (optional, for extra indulgence)

¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan with cooking spray or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

      Mix Dry Ingredients:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, whole wheat flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

          Combine Wet Ingredients:

In another bowl, mix together the applesauce, Greek yogurt, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and creamy.

              Combine Mixtures:

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough brownies.

                  Add Chocolate:

If using, fold in dark chocolate chips and nuts to the batter. This is optional, but it adds a nice texture and a flavor punch!

                      Transfer to Baking Pan:

Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan. Use a spatula to spread it evenly and smooth out the top.

                          Bake:

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not completely clean).

                              Cool and Serve:

Once baked, remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, lift them out using the edges of the parchment paper, if used, and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, slice into squares and enjoy!
