Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef or turkey

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1/2 green bell pepper, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1/2 teaspoon chili powder

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns

Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or chopped scallions

Instructions

Brown the Meat: In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it’s browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat, if necessary.

Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 3-5 minutes until the vegetables are soft.

Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Create the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the sauce over the cooked meat and vegetables in the skillet. Stir until everything is well coated and heated through (about 3-4 minutes).

Toast the Buns: While the meat mixture simmers, slice the hamburger buns and toast them lightly in a toaster or on a skillet until golden brown.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Spoon the savory meat mixture generously onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Add any optional toppings you desire, then place the top bun on each sandwich.

Serve: Enjoy your Sloppy Joes hot, with a side of fries, chips, or a fresh salad.
