Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Sauté Aromatics: In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Add Tomatoes: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir well to combine. If you like a sweeter sauce, add the sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes.

Season: Sprinkle in the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together, and let it come to a gentle simmer.

Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and deepen.

Taste and Adjust: After simmering, taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Add more salt, pepper, or oregano according to your preference.

Serve: Remove from heat. If desired, add fresh basil leaves for a burst of freshness. Serve the marinara sauce over your favorite pasta, or use it as a dipping sauce for breadsticks or pizza.
