Stromboli, often mistaken for its cousin, the calzone, has its roots firmly planted in Italian-American cuisine. The dish is said to have been invented in the 1950s in the United States, particularly in the Philadelphia area, where Italian immigrants brought their culinary traditions and adapted them to local tastes. Unlike calzones, which are typically folded over and stuffed with ingredients, Stromboli features a more cylindrical shape, resembling a rolled-up pizza. This unique form allows for an abundance of filling and makes it easy to slice and serve.

Ingredients

1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup sliced pepperoni

1/2 cup cooked Italian sausage, crumbled

1/2 cup bell peppers, thinly sliced (optional)

1/4 cup black olives, sliced (optional)

2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Marinara sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Dough: Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

Fill with Toppings: Spread the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly across the dough, leaving about an inch around the edges. Layer the pepperoni, crumbled sausage, bell peppers, and black olives on top of the cheese.

Season: Sprinkle the Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan cheese over the toppings for added flavor.

Roll the Stromboli: Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Make sure to tuck in the sides as you go to keep the filling inside. Pinch the seams to seal the edges tightly.

Prepare for Baking: Transfer the rolled Stromboli to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with the beaten egg for a shiny golden crust. Optionally, you can make a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape.

Bake: Place the Stromboli in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cool and Slice: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. This will make it easier to cut and help avoid spills from the melted cheese.

Serve with Sauce: Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your deliciously easy Stromboli!
