Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed

1 cup cornstarch

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for gluten-free version)

1/2 cup water

Oil for frying (canola, vegetable, or peanut oil)

For the Honey Garlic Sauce:

1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup for vegan option)

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

1 tbsp rice vinegar

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (for thickening)

Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu:

    - Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

      Make the Coating:

        - In a bowl, mix together the cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.

          Batter Station:

            - In another bowl, whisk together the flour and water to create a smooth batter. It should be thick enough to coat the tofu but not too runny.

              Coat the Tofu:

                - Dip each tofu nugget into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off, then coat it in the cornstarch mixture. Repeat for all tofu pieces and place them on a parchment-lined tray.

                  Fry the Tofu:

                    - In a large frying pan, heat enough oil to cover the bottom over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated tofu nuggets in batches, ensuring they don’t overcrowd the pan.

                      - Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove nuggets and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

                        Prepare the Honey Garlic Sauce:

                          - In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

                            - In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with water and add it to the sauce. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens and is glossy. Remove from heat.

                              Glaze the Tofu:

                                - In a large bowl, gently toss the crispy tofu nuggets with the honey garlic sauce until they are well coated.

                                  Serve:

                                    - Transfer the coated nuggets to a serving platter, sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish. Serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauce or alongside steamed rice and vegetables.
