To achieve the best results, it’s essential to understand the key ingredients that contribute to the flavor and texture of this cake. The star of the show is, of course, the apples. Choosing the right apples is crucial for flavor and texture. Tart varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work wonderfully, providing a contrast to the sweetness of the cake batter. They hold their shape well when baked, ensuring that you get juicy apple chunks in every bite. Avoid using mushy apples, as they can make the cake overly soggy.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 sleeve of saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Sea salt, for sprinkling

Optional: ½ cup crushed holiday candies (like peppermint or candy canes)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Pan: Line a large baking sheet (with a rim) with aluminum foil or parchment paper, making sure it hangs over the edges for easy lifting later.

Arrange Crackers: Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface.

Make the Toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for 3-4 minutes without stirring until it becomes a deep caramel color.

Pour the Toffee: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers, spreading it gently with a spatula to cover them evenly.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and golden.

Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes until they become soft, then spread the melted chocolate evenly using a spatula.

Sprinkle Nuts and Sea Salt: Evenly distribute the chopped nuts over the chocolate layer. If desired, sprinkle crushed holiday candies and a pinch of sea salt on top.

Cool: Let the pan cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until fully set.

Break into Pieces: Once set, lift the candy out of the pan using the foil or parchment paper. Break it into pieces of your desired size.

Serve and Enjoy: Enjoy your homemade Christmas Cracker Candy, or package it in festive containers to share with friends and family!
