Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian seasoned)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

1 large egg

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup cooked pasta (penne or rotini works best)

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Prepare the Meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef (or turkey), breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian herbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are evenly combined. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.

Brown the Meatballs: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil. Cook the meatballs in batches for about 5 minutes, turning until they are browned on all sides. They do not need to be fully cooked through since they will finish baking in the casserole.

Prepare the Casserole Layering: In the greased baking dish, pour a layer of marinara sauce to cover the bottom. Next, add the cooked pasta, then the browned meatballs. Spoon dollops of ricotta cheese over the meatballs, followed by another layer of marinara sauce.

Add the Cheese: Finally, sprinkle the entire dish with shredded mozzarella cheese evenly.

Bake the Casserole: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, and enjoy!
