Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix)

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and black pepper, to taste

1 cup ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)

1 loaf of French or Italian bread

1/2 cup softened butter

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried parsley

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

        Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Combine Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti, the meat sauce, ricotta cheese, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Mix well until the pasta is well-coated with the sauce.

                      Step 4: Assemble the Casserole

Transfer the pasta mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Top the ziti with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 5: Prepare the Garlic Bread Topping

In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic powder, dried parsley, salt, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).

Slice the French or Italian bread in half lengthwise and spread the garlic butter evenly on both halves.

Cut the bread into chunks and arrange the pieces over the cheese layer of the baked ziti.

                                    Step 6: Bake

Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

                                        Step 7: Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
