Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 cloves garlic, minced

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 whole wheat hamburger buns

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)

Fresh arugula or spinach leaves (for topping)

Pickles (for topping)

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking until they become soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deep golden brown. Add minced garlic during the last minute of cooking. Remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the Burger Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions. Take one portion, flatten it into a patty, and place a tablespoon of shredded Swiss cheese and a spoonful of caramelized onions in the center. Place another patty on top and seal the edges tightly to form a stuffed burger. Repeat with the remaining beef, cheese, and onions.

Cook the Burgers: Preheat a grill or a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the stuffed burgers for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium, or until they reach your desired doneness. Ensure the cheese inside is melted and gooey.

Assemble Your Burgers: Toast the whole wheat hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster. Spread Dijon mustard on the bottom half of each bun if using. Place the cooked burger patty on each bun, top with fresh arugula or spinach, and add pickles if desired. Place the top half of the bun on each burger.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve your caramelized onion and Swiss stuffed burgers with a side of sweet potato fries or a fresh salad for a delightful meal.
