Ingredients

1 pound (450g) ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage (optional)

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 large egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Ziti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Make the Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

Add Protein (Optional): If using ground beef or sausage, add it to the skillet and brown until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.

Combine with Tomatoes: Pour the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste into the skillet, stirring to combine. Add the oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes to meld flavors, stirring occasionally.

Prepare Ricotta Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Mix until smooth and set aside.

Combine Ziti and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the tomato sauce. Stir until the pasta is well coated.

Layer Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture. Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the ziti, then sprinkle with half of the remaining mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan.

Bake the Ziti: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves (if desired) and serve warm.
