Ingredients

4 large hot dogs

1 pre-made bagel dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup water

1 tablespoon baking soda

1 egg (for egg wash)

2 tablespoons poppy seeds

1 tablespoon coarse sea salt

Optional: Cream cheese or your favorite condiment for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Dough: If using store-bought bagel dough, roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut it into strips that are approximately 1 inch wide and long enough to wrap around the hot dogs. If you're making homemade dough, roll it into a similar shape.

Wrap the Hot Dogs: Take a hot dog and wrap a strip of dough around it spirally, making sure to cover the entire dog. Pinch the ends to seal and ensure the dough sticks to itself when baking. Repeat for all hot dogs.

Boil the Water: In a medium saucepan, bring the cup of water to a boil. Once boiling, carefully stir in the baking soda (it may bubble up!), then reduce to a gentle simmer.

Poach the Bagel Dogs: Add the wrapped bagel dogs one at a time to the simmering water for about 30 seconds each. This step gives them that signature bagel texture. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush it over each bagel dog to give them a shiny, golden finish.

Add Toppings: Sprinkle poppy seeds and coarse sea salt on top of the egg-washed bagel dogs.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until they are golden brown and fluffy.

Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with cream cheese or your favorite dipping sauce!
