“Oh, I think it is,” I said, maintaining eye contact. “Everyone needs to know how generous you are with other people’s money. Especially when that money is supposed to be securing *my* family’s future.” He grabbed my arm, his grip firm. “You’re making a scene.” “I *am* the scene, Vincent. You created this. You chose to buy a house for Sophia Reynolds. You chose to lie about it.”
“It wasn’t a lie of omission! I was going to tell you.” His voice lacked conviction. I pulled my arm free. “When? After she’d moved in and decorated? After Lily had picked out her bedroom? After everyone in Chicago knew about your generosity?”
He ran a hand through his hair, looking genuinely defeated for the first time I could remember. “It's complicated, Claire. Sophia… she’s been through a lot. Her husband…” He trailed off. “Her husband died five years ago. I know that, Vincent. I’m not entirely oblivious to the details of your personal assistant’s life.”
“I just wanted to help,” he mumbled. “Help? Or control? Is this how you ‘help’ people, Vincent? By buying their silence? By creating a debt they can never repay?” He stared at me, speechless. Then his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his face paling. "It's Sophia," he whispered. "She's asking what's going on."
The Explanation
Vincent took a deep breath and answered the call, stepping further into the hallway. I could only catch snippets of the conversation. “...what did you do?...no, no, don’t worry...I’m handling it…just stay put…” He hung up, looking utterly drained. “She thinks you’re angry with her,” he said, avoiding my gaze. “She’s terrified. She says she tried to refuse the house, but I insisted.”
“Insisted?” I repeated, raising an eyebrow. “You ‘insisted’ on giving a single mother a million-dollar mansion? That doesn’t sound like you, Vincent. You’re a master manipulator, not a philanthropist.” He flinched. “That’s not fair.” “Isn’t it? You’ve spent years building a reputation for ruthless efficiency. Now you’re suddenly Santa Claus? I don’t believe it for a second.” He sighed, running a hand over his face. “There’s something you don’t know.”
“Oh, I’m sure there is. What is it? Another secret life? Another hidden fortune? Another woman?” He shook his head. “It’s about my brother, Daniel. He… he had a gambling problem. A serious one. He owed a lot of money to some very dangerous people.” He paused, his voice barely a whisper.
“Sophia’s late husband… he was involved. He was the one who introduced Daniel to that world.” My blood ran cold. “Are you saying…?” “I paid off Daniel’s debts. Years ago. But those people… they have a way of holding onto things. They resurfaced, threatening Sophia and Lily. The house… it was a way to protect them. A safe haven.”
The Revelation
“Protect them?” I asked, my voice trembling. “By buying them a mansion? That makes absolutely no sense, Vincent. You could have gone to the police. You could have hired security. You could have… anything other than this.” He looked at me, his eyes pleading. “I tried. The police couldn’t help. Those people operate outside the law. Security would have just escalated things. This… this was the only way to guarantee their safety. I made Sophia sign a non-disclosure agreement.”
