I don’t understand.” Thomas closed his eyes, his face etched with a pain I’d never witnessed before. He looked ancient, suddenly frail, a stark contrast to the strong, steady man who’d held me together these past months. When he finally opened them, tears streamed down his face, tracing lines in the wrinkles I’d always associated with a life well-lived. “Adrian… Adrian Cole. That name…” He trailed off, shaking his head slowly. “It’s impossible. It just… it can’t be.” He looked at me, his blue eyes filled with a desperate plea. “Claire, please. Tell me everything. Everything about Adrian. Where did you meet him? What did he do?”
The Shadow of a Past Life
“We met at the Bellmere Library,” I stammered, trying to regain my composure. “He was… researching local history. He was a writer, or said he was. We bonded over old photographs and stories about the town.” The words felt inadequate, flimsy against the weight of his distress. “He was kind, Grandpa. So incredibly kind. He helped me paint the nursery, remember? He… he just disappeared. The night I told him I was pregnant, he was gone.” Thomas listened intently, his gaze fixed on my face, occasionally drifting down to Lily. “Did he ever mention his family? Anything about his parents? Or… or a brother?” The question struck me as odd.
“No. He was… private. He never talked about his family. He said they lived out of state, somewhere in the Midwest, I think. Why?” Thomas’s jaw tightened. He stood up abruptly, pacing the small porch. “Because,” he said, his voice low and strained, “Adrian Cole isn’t just a name. It’s a legacy. A painful one.” He paused, running a hand through his thinning hair. “There was an Adrian Cole who grew up in Bellmere. A very troubled young man. He… he was my son.”
A Secret Kept for Decades
The world tilted on its axis. “Your… your son?” I whispered, the words catching in my throat. “But… you never mentioned… I thought…” Thomas stopped pacing and looked at me, his eyes filled with a lifetime of regret. “I disowned him, Claire. Years ago. He made choices I couldn’t condone. He ran with a bad crowd, got involved in things he shouldn’t have. We had a… falling out. A terrible one. I haven’t spoken to him in over thirty years.” He sank back into his chair, his shoulders slumped. “He left Bellmere and never looked back. I assumed he’d started a new life, changed his ways. I never imagined…” He glanced at Lily, then back at me.
“That he’d come back. And that you… you would fall in love with him.” I felt a wave of nausea. “But… why the secrecy? Why not tell me? If you knew him, wouldn’t you want to know what happened to him?” Thomas’s voice was barely a whisper. “I was ashamed, Claire. Ashamed of the choices he made, ashamed of my own failures as a father. I buried that part of my life, hoping it would stay buried. And now…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “Now, it’s all come crashing down.” He looked at Lily again, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “Those eyes… he had the same eyes.”
